Inca Trail permits are capped per day and sold only through licensed operators, often months ahead. Nothing is available at the trailhead or same-week.
What people get wrong
First-timers fly into Cusco and go straight for Machu Picchu the next morning. Altitude sickness at Cusco's elevation catches up fast without a day or two lower in the Sacred Valley first.
When, and why it matters
The dry season keeps mountain trails and river crossings passable without rain closures; travel in the wet months and a trek day can be cancelled outright, with no reschedule built into most permits.
