What you cannot just book
No checkout gets you into the narrow Kuttanad canals. Only small punted boats fit, not diesel houseboats, and it takes a local paddler or a village introduction to get past the main lake.
What people get wrong
First-timers book an overnight Alleppey houseboat expecting quiet water and end up on the main lake, engines, a line of other houseboats, no village stop, because that's the default package, not the backwater experience.
When, and why it matters
Backwater routes shift with the monsoon: houseboats run the high-water lake routes in the wetter months and switch to narrower village canals once water levels drop, so the season decides which villages you can reach at all.
