What you cannot just book
Many of Kyoto's traditional ryotei restaurants operate on ichigen-san okotowari. No first-time customers. Entry comes from an existing client's introduction, not a reservation platform.
What people get wrong
First-timers reach the crowded lower gates at Fushimi Inari, take the photo, and turn back. The shrine continues for kilometres up the mountain, and the crowd thins hard past the second viewpoint.
When, and why it matters
Autumn colour moves through Kyoto's gardens over several weeks, not all at once. Elevation and tree species stagger the peak temple by temple, so the week you pick decides which garden is worth seeing.
