What people get wrong
Travellers fly into Leh and drive straight up to Khardung La or Pangong Tso the same day, before the body has adjusted to the altitude, acclimatization needs rest days first.
When, and why it matters
The Manali-Leh and Srinagar-Leh highways close under snow each winter and reopen on a date set by that year's clearance work, not a fixed calendar. The route in and out is decided by the mountain, not the itinerary.
