Lisbon's real fado lives in unmarked tascas, not ticketed shows; a local decides whether you hear a singer or watch a performance staged for tourists.

Tram 28 winds through Alfama, Graça and Baixa and is the standard way visitors see the old hill neighbourhoods.

What a local knowsCatch the first tram out of the depot before 8am, then walk up to Miradouro da Graça for the same view without the crowd, and skip the fado house with a menu in six languages for the tasca two streets back with none.

What a local changes here

Lisbon's real fado lives in unmarked tascas, not ticketed shows; a local decides whether you hear a singer or watch a performance staged for tourists.

What you cannot just book

A seat at an informal fado night in a Mouraria or Alfama tasca, where the singer performs unannounced, depends on being brought by someone the owner already knows.

What people get wrong

Visitors queue for tram 28 at Martim Moniz around midday, packed and pickpocketed, when the same near-empty tram runs the identical route before 8am.

When, and why it matters

Alfama's Santo António festival runs on fixed June dates; outside that week the same alleys are quiet, and the trip either lands on it or misses it entirely.
