Samarkand's monuments are labeled for tourists, but telling original tilework from Soviet-era restoration, or getting past the courtyard into a working atelier, needs someone who works these buildings, not a map.
The Registan. The three-madrasa square that anchors nearly every photo of Samarkand.
What a local knowsA guide who works the Registan daily brings clients in at opening, ahead of the tour groups, then moves them straight to Shah-i-Zinda's tiled corridor before it fills once the buses start arriving mid-morning.
What a local changes here
Samarkand's monuments are labeled for tourists, but telling original tilework from Soviet-era restoration, or getting past the courtyard into a working atelier, needs someone who works these buildings, not a map.
What you cannot just book
A ticket buys the courtyard. Access to the ateliers still doing fresco and tilework repair inside the Registan's madrasas comes through an introduction from someone who knows the conservators, not through the ticket window.
What people get wrong
First-timers do Samarkand as a same-day rail trip from Tashkent and give Registan an hour. The complex, Shah-i-Zinda, and the Ulugbek Observatory each need their own half-day, and two of the three close well before sunset.
When, and why it matters
Registan and Shah-i-Zinda are open-air stone and tile in a desert climate. Visit before midday in summer, or the heat empties the courtyards by noon and pushes every tour group into the same narrow evening window.
