What you cannot just book
Standing near the pyres at Manikarnika or Harishchandra Ghat, or being permitted to sit with a mourning family, happens through someone with a standing relationship to the Dom Raja's attendants. No ghat guide sells that access, and no ticket exists for it.
What people get wrong
A self-appointed boatman or ghat-side guide asks for a cash 'donation' toward cremation wood. The actual wood trade runs through registered sellers at the ghat, not through anyone pulling a stranger aside near the pyres.
When, and why it matters
Ganga water levels rise with the monsoon and submerge the lower steps of several ghats, shifting where the evening aarti platform sits that week. A local knows which ghat sequence still holds and which is underwater.
